We know that Jesus is powerful. After all, He raised the dead, gave sight to the blind, and “rebuked” nature. There’s no doubt that He can do whatever He wants, any time He wants.
But is it possible for Him to calm my soul?
Our lives can be full of anxiety, fear, suspicion, danger, and sadness. We call on God to help us, but do we actually believe He can? Or, more specifically, how can we be know if He has?
For that, we turn to the Psalms of Lament. These psalms make up nearly 1/3 of the book of Psalms, and they are very relatable when we find ourselves in tough times. They also teach us a lot about our own faith and how it practically intersects with the world around us.

CloseJohn 17 is a masterclass in prayer, but few of us take the time to really examine what it talks about. Jesus prays for Himself, His Apostles, and the disciples at large, but He also prays for the work that He's engaged in, as well as for the Apostles to develop strong trust in God's Word. And unity. He prays for the church to be united in purpose as a powerful testimony to the world. Is that what we're praying for? If not, maybe a quick re-examination of what Jesus prays about can help us focus on what we should be doing with our own life.
