Ever since Luke penned the book of Acts, people have wondered about his note in Acts 16:14: “God opened Lydia’s heart.” But the text is pretty clear — God did, in fact, open her heart — but two questions remain: How did He do that, and will He do that to us in the same way?

CloseNearly a third of Jesus' teachings consisted of stories, or parables. These seemingly innocent tales were not just given for entertainment though -- they were designed to penetrate the heart in a way a series of commands couldn't. They forced the listener to meditate on the teachings and make the change from the inside out. As such, they were exceedingly effective. Can we use parables today? Of course! Maybe not in the same way as Jesus, but using illustrations can still be effective if handled properly.
