Pharisees appear on nearly every page of the Gospels, yet little is known about where they came from, or especially, why they’re so hostile to Jesus. So if you were to create one of these beings out of thin air, what ingredients would you need? You’d start with a strong spiritual foundation, throw in a hearty sprinkling of egotism, and then finally, a failure to see the big picture. Poof! You’ve got a pharisee.

CloseIn Judges 12, "shibboleth" was a code word that the Israelites used to determine who was with them and who was their enemy. In 2023, a "shibboleth" can be any man-made litmus test we use to determine who is faithful and who is not. Some of these are necessary (1 John 4:1-6), while others (Matthew 15:1-9) are unBiblical. If we have any of the latter, we need to tear them down -- for the sake of our soul's and others'.
