It’s one of the great ironies in life that when tragedy strikes the hardest, mercy is at its brightest. We may never have known about the firefighters that charged up the twin towers had it not been for the horrific events of 9/11, and it’s possible we may never have known about the extent of God’s mercy and grace without the cross. Wherever there’s a gross inequality, there’s an opportunity for mercy to exist. We just have to look for it.

CloseIf you want to impress God, the last thing you need to do is show up with a bunch of fancy items you *hope* God wants. Huge displays of religiosity and meaningless gestures are worthless if they're not accompanied by actual devotion and humility. The Centurion of Matthew 7 displayed the latter. His understanding of authority, humility, and ultimately compassion demonstrated what was really in his heart. The result was that Jesus "marveled" at the "great faith" that he possessed.
