The story of Sarah and Hagar is one of contention, and Paul draws on this contention in detailing the relationship between the Old and New Covenants in Galatians 4. But the real story is not about simply making a parallel between the two, but drawing a lesson that is meant for all of us to learn from: Don’t go back to slavery.

CloseEveryone wants to be a leader, but few are willing to make the sacrifices required in order to effectively lead people. Fewer still are willing to place themselves in a completely subservient position and put the interests of others ahead of themselves. But isn't that what Jesus did? As He Himself said: "I came not to be served, but to serve, and to give Myself as a ransom for many." Unless we embody the same mentality, we can never hope to lead those under our charge, no matter who that is.
