A message from the series “Toolbox for Evangelism.” Nearly a third of Jesus’ teachings consisted of stories, or parables. These seemingly innocent tales were not just given for entertainment though — they were designed to penetrate the heart in a way a series of commands couldn’t. They forced the listener to meditate on the teachings and make the change from the inside out. As such, they were exceedingly effective.
Can we use parables today? Of course! Maybe not in the same way as Jesus, but using illustrations can still be effective if handled properly.

CloseWhen I first started preaching, someone once told me to "Preach to broken hearts, because there's one on every pew." Sometimes, I think we spend too much time focusing on the head and not enough on the heart. In the end, what Christians need to remember -- despite everything else -- is that God is near to them. Everything else hinges on holding fast to that idea.
