A message from the series “Toolbox for Evangelism.” Nearly a third of Jesus’ teachings consisted of stories, or parables. These seemingly innocent tales were not just given for entertainment though — they were designed to penetrate the heart in a way a series of commands couldn’t. They forced the listener to meditate on the teachings and make the change from the inside out. As such, they were exceedingly effective.
Can we use parables today? Of course! Maybe not in the same way as Jesus, but using illustrations can still be effective if handled properly.

CloseWhen Jesus visited the home of Martha and Mary, there was a lot of excitement. Martha rose to the occasion, playing host and making sure that everyone was taken care of. Mary, on the other hand, sat at Jesus' feet and listened. Martha chastised her sister for her inactivity, but Jesus countered by saying that Mary had "chosen the good part." What does that mean? Have I chosen the good part, too?
