A message from the series “Toolbox for Evangelism.” Nearly a third of Jesus’ teachings consisted of stories, or parables. These seemingly innocent tales were not just given for entertainment though — they were designed to penetrate the heart in a way a series of commands couldn’t. They forced the listener to meditate on the teachings and make the change from the inside out. As such, they were exceedingly effective.
Can we use parables today? Of course! Maybe not in the same way as Jesus, but using illustrations can still be effective if handled properly.

CloseThere are some things that we have no problem knowing where to draw the lines on. Items like the deity/humanity of Christ, the Virgin Birth, Resurrection of Jesus are specifically defined in Scripture as marks of faithfulness. Disbelief equal heresy. But about some of the other items? Where do we draw the line between opinion and doctrine?
